About
The Joe Barnhart Scholarship Program was created and funded by the Joe Barnhart Foundation in 1997. Created to motivate and assist Beeville Independent School District middle and high school students to pursue post-secondary educations, the Joe Barnhart Scholarship Program has benefited more than 3,000 students since it began.
This collaboration between a private foundation and a public school provides mentorship and career path exploration to all students enrolled in the Beeville Independent School District. Currently, the program has a full-time staff of four who office within A.C. Jones High School and Moreno Junior High. In addition to college, trade school, and career counseling, JBSP hosts more than 100 events annually including workshops, visiting university representatives and alumni, and volunteer service opportunities. JBSP also organizes and provides transportation for campus visits to select Texas universities. Resources for all students include:
Aptitude testing and a survey of students’ interests and possibilities.
One-on-one relationship with a volunteer mentor
Career path exploration reinforced by a series of career nights, lectures, and job shadowing
Eligibility for merit and needs-based scholarships awarded by the foundation.
The impact on students over the last 25 years includes increases in students taking college entrance exams, along with increased attendance at colleges and other post-secondary institutions.
